DIY GLITTER PLATFORM SHOES

YOU WILL NEED:
GLITTER/ ULTRA FINE GLITTER
PVA/ SUPER TACKY GLUE
SMALL PAINTBRUSH
PLAIN PLATFORM SHOES - example
A3 PAPER
TRAY
STICKY HAIRSPRAY/ SPRAY MOUNT/ SPRAY ADHESIVE
JAR OR CUP

As promised on Instagram here is my DIY for my glitter platforms!! I hope you all enjoy reading this as much as I enjoyed glitterfying my platforms and maybe you'll try it out yourself! If so, leave your links to your glitter platforms in the comments so I can seee!! Also, these probably aren't weather proof, I haven't tested them in the downpour outside but I doubt they would stand up to the english weather. You could always go the extra mile and varnish them!!

TIPS:

  • Choose platforms that aren't very bendy. The ones I chose have a solid plastic platform, if any of you have been following my blog for a long time you will know of my DIY Glitter Dr Martens which were so cool and lasted quite a long time, but because the leather moves and the set glue does not, the glue and glitter eventually split and came away from the boots. If you want to apply glitter to a bendy surface I would advise using a flexible adhesive like this one.

  • You may want to rough up the surface of the shoe with some sand paper before applying the glitter to create a better surface for the glue and glitter to grip to.

  • I used three small tubes of glitter, one was quite a thick glitter and the other two were 'ultra fine' which provided more coverage.

METHOD

  1. Place the A3 paper on the tray. If you don't have A3 paper you could glue two pieces of A4 together.
  2.  Place the shoe on the paper and make sure you have everything else ready (glue, brush, glitter, jar).
  3. Apply glue to platform and then distribute glue evenly on the section you want to glitter with a brush, make sure its not too thick as it will take ages to dry.
  4. Sprinkle the thick glitter lightly onto the area where you have applied the glue.
  5. Tap shoe onto a tray or paper so that excess glitter falls off.
  6. Sprinkle the fine glitter on top of the same area which should fill in any of the original shoe colour showing through.
  7. Tap the shoe on the tray or paper so that the excess glitter falls off.
  8. Repeat steps 4, 5, 6 and 7 until the entire shoe is covered, if you feel you are running out of glue, tap the shoe on the paper once more and then remove the paper and place the shoe onto the tray. Fold the paper in half making sure none of the glitter falls out and pour the excess glitter into a jar or cup, you can then use this glitter again.
  9.  When the entire shoe is covered in glitter, get another tube of fine glitter and dust all over each platform to ensure that the coverage looks equal and not patchy.
  10. Tap the shoe on the paper again to remove excess glitter.
  11. When the shoe is dry (I'd give it 30 mins) you can thinly apply more glue to any patchy areas, I would advise patting this with your finger instead of the brush as you will be more likely to remove the glitter already on the shoe when using the brush. Also patting it down will make the glue thinner and wider spread therefore decreasing the patchy look.
  12. Use the rest of the glitter to dust over the shoe again.
  13. Tap the shoe on the paper again and leave to dry.
  14. Once dry, tap again and make sure all excess glitter has been removed (Although this is kind of impossible, glitter is like sand and you will still be finding it in years to come even when you've moved house or even to a different country)
  15. Spray your glitter platforms with sticky hairspray, or if you've got some lying around, spray mount is also a really good option!
  16. Leave to dry and then you can wear them yay!
